Perlite / Vermiculite Mix

Perlite is mixed with vermiculite and diatomacious earth which is the ideal medium for hand watering. This is because vermiculite itself holds 50% of its own weight in water, and when combined with perlite, which has superior air carrying, you have a medium that has good air retention and good water retention. This medium is a good all round performer, that is able to be reused a couple of times before being thrown away or sterilised.

Vermiculite by itself is not a suitable growing medium, even though you can use it as such, we do not recommend it unless you know what you are doing. It holds too much water for most applications, and so requires very infrequent watering and will cause problems with rot (due to the rootzone being constantly wet).

This mix is the best solution for hand watering, is doesn't hold as much water as cocopeat, but enough so that you aren't watering every day. It is also easier to check for dryness. If you are hand watering we suggest starting out with this medium and then moving to cocopeat once you are well acquainted with hydroponics.
