Perlite
The fact that perlite has many microscopic air pockets in its structure means that it provides excellent root aeration (important for root growth and plant metabolism) and also that it is also a very light medium to use. This may be an advantage (for ease of carrying, etc) but it also has a disadvantage however, as larger plants may not be afforded much stability by perlite, so be careful. The irregular surface of perlite has many spaces for water to become trapped, and hence perlite has reasonable capacity for holding water. The process of forming perlite by heating volcanic material to high temperatures manes that the medium is very sterile initially as well. The water and air holding capabilities of perlite may not be as much as cocopeat, but the fact that the medium is not organic and hence less
prone to invasion by insects may be an advantage for some growers in areas of high pest risks. We generally only sell the coarse perlite in the shop - it is the most suitable for a hydroponic application. Suitability of use
