Case Study Dekker Glassculture Field test with hybrid lighting (LEDs and GreenPower lamps) of tomatoes
The field test will include many expertise from all mentioned parties including experiences from Nordic countries with interlighting. For more warmer climates and different plant densities this appeared difficult to use (e.g. The Netherlands) mainly because of too much radiation heat. Still tomato grower Gert Jan Dekker believes that a lot can be gained by using interlighting. He hopes that by using LEDs as interlighting, combined with SON-T as top lighting, you will get a perfect combination of light and heat in the crop leading to higher productions. Results from four years LED research at Wageningen University prooved on that activity of leaves is determined for a large part by the amount of light they get, instead of the age of the leaf. But it is not known yet what this can do to production. All these experiences stimulated us to set up a large field test to get proof for the concept. Plant Dynamics will provide support on the plant physiological part of the test by doing measurements on plant activity and helping with the interpretation of the results. Wageningen University will perform a test with hybrid lighting as well this season, but they will look at cucumber growth. The knowledge of these test will help us all to develop meaningfull light solutions for greenhouse applications.
