The Smart Valve is small enough to fit on the palm of your hand. Its appearance is simple, but its performance is incredible. Being simple enables it to be a low cost item, making it practical to have one valve for each individual container. This feature is the crux of the systems versatility. The Smart Valve is very different from the conventional "ball-cock" type of float valve in that it allows total reduction of the fluid level before it refills the tray.  This allows the plants to experience their own tailored "Wet-Dry" cycle which encourages fast healthy growth.

When connected to the nutrient supply (which is placed higher than the valve therefore allowing gravity to do all the work) the valve opens to allow nutrient solution to enter the bottom of the growing container.  The valve then closes and will not permit further solution through until all the original supply has been used by the plant.

The Smart Valve - Diagrammatic Explanation
The tray starts empty and the smart valve opens to let nutrient solution into the tray.  The solution will fill the tray to the pre-set level of about 30mm (a little over 1 inch)
Water level in the tray drops as nutrient solution is consumed by the plant.  It is now nearly empty but the smart valve remains closed.
The tray is now completely empty as the plant has consumed all the nutrient solution.  The Smart Valve will need some time (approx 30 minutes) before it re-opens to let in more nutrient solution.
The smart valve will close once the pre-set level of about 25mm is reached again.  This completes one watering cycle.
