Hydroponic Systems

Hydroponics is the science of growing plants without soil.  The same natural elements necessary for plant growth in soils are used, with the advantage that your plants are not restricted by weeds or soil-borne pests and diseases. Growing plants in a hydroponics system isn't as complicated as it sounds. Yes it's a type of technology, but if you understand the basics and keep an eye on the health and condition of your plants, you will be successful.

Different hydroponics systems have different components but most systems will have or need:

  • A nutrient reservoir
  • A pump to circulate water and keep it fresh
  • Spaces to hold the plants
  • Growing media, which is the material to hold the roots and help support the weight of the plant.  Most common types are perlite, clay balls and coconut fibre
  • Plants
  • Nutrients
  • Light
