General System Maintenance for Aquaponics

Video Transcript:

Hi, I’m Chris from Aqua Gardening

In this Frequently Asked Questions Video for Thriving aquaponic gardens – we are going to look at how to maintain your system to keep you fish and plants healthy. Aquaponic systems are a symbiotic relationship between fish and plants, and they are both tied together in a closed eco system. Beneficial bacteria make the nutrients for the plants, and need to be nurtured to keep the system working at its best potential.

After the first three months or so, the system stabilises and you won’t see much change to the water quality, so we split the maintenance tasks to those you need to do before the 3 month point, and those required from that stage on. This is explained in detail with our water testing video which is available to all the customers who purchase a kit from us.

General tasks include:

  • Feeding the fish
  • Cleaning sludge out from the fish tank
  • Checking the flood and drain action of the grow bed is working
  • Cleaning the grow beds once every one or two years
  • Harvesting and replacing plants
  • Adding nutrient supplements every fortnight
  • And topping up the water.

How easy is that compared to a soil gardening? The bigger the system gets, the easier many of the tasks get as the changes to the water quality are a lot slower. Our exclusive video library offers tips and training in all aquaponics aspects – even how to understand the actions of your fish.

This is an invaluable resource, not available from anyone else in Australia!
