Growing with Aquaponics & Hydroponics Saves Space

Video Transcript:

Hi, It’s Chris From Aqua Gardening,

Great, so growing with Aquaponics and Hydroponics you can have lettuce and herbs more quickly and more easily. But what other benefits will this give you?

You can save on space!

These days new houses are getting smaller and smaller, as the price of land marches higher the whole time. So it’s more common to have a narrow strip of lawn as our yard, or none at all. Sometimes we only have a small balcony or just a corner inside our house, but this doesn’t mean you can’t grow your own food!

Soilless gardening systems give you the benefit of saving space. This is because the roots don’t need to search for food, so seedlings can be planted a lot closer to each other. As long as the mature plants can receive sunlight on their leaves, you can pack in as many plants as you want. When it comes to climbing plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, passionfruit, and some berries, these plants only use up a small fraction of the growing space, and the rest of the plant is directed up a climbing frame or fence. This results in more space for the short plants in the growing bed directly below. So many more plants can be grown in the same space!

Look for instance at this picture of a small back yard.

Using soil garden beds, you could feed your family, however it would take up all of the available space! Whereas using an aquaponic or hydroponic system, you could grow the same amount of food in just half of the area. It is also possible to use only the fences, or even shelves attached to the fences, to grow everything! This would leave plenty of space for you to enjoy the lawn.

The other benefit of taking up less space is moving part of the garden indoors or to a balcony.

A disused corner may be converted into a productive growing area, just as long there is a grow light there or the sun reaches the location for as little as 3 hours a day. Compact and attractive systems can be added into kitchens and hallways, or even featured next to a table on the balcony or deck.

So even if you are space-poor, you can still garden and produce fresh healthy food for your family.
