Maze Worm Farm: Your Composting Solution

The Maze Worm Farm is an innovative solution to the problem of organic waste disposal. This stylish and compact worm farm, designed and produced in Australia using mostly recycled materials, is perfect for balconies, decks, patios, or gardens.

Features and Benefits

  • Rotatable working trays: The Maze Worm Farm comes equipped with two rotatable working trays, allowing for optimal airflow for worms on all levels.
  • Worm-saver tray: This tray prevents worms from falling through to the bottom of the housing.
  • Base with open drain: The base has an open drain that prevents liquid build-up and encourages additional airflow.
  • 2-liter liquid collection tray: This tray is used for the collection of worm tea.
  • Easy to clean and maintain: The Maze Worm Farm is designed for easy cleaning and maintenance, making it user-friendly for all ages.

How to Use

  1. Soak the coconut peat in around 1/3 bucket of water for 30 minutes. This will become the bedding for your worms.
  2. Start with the base. Install legs if you have them (may be sold separately). Ensure the worm-saver tray and liquid collection tray are in place.
  3. Put the first working tray in place and line it with 2-3 sheets of wet newspaper (not supplied). The second working tray won’t be needed until the first is full, so keep it in a safe place.
  4. Add wet coconut peat to the layer of wet newspaper. This becomes the bedding for your worms. Make sure it’s not too wet or too dry. The bedding should feel moist with minimal water dripping out when you squeeze it.
  5. Add your worms (sold separately). Place them on top of the coconut peat with any bedding that came with them. Leave the worms a week before adding any food scraps. This allows the worms time to settle into their new home.
  6. Cover them with a worm blanket (not supplied). The worm blanket can be any fabric made from natural, non-synthetics such as hessian. Several sheets of newspaper or cardboard can also be used.
  7. Place the lid on the worm farm and put it in a cool dry area away from the sun and rain.
  8. When your first working tray is full, you can then add your second. When two working trays are being used, the worms will travel through the holes in the bottom to find new food scraps. When the second tray is full, the first will be full of casting to use on your plants.

Aqua Gardening Suggests These are Best For

This product is perfect for those who are environmentally conscious and looking for a solution to organic waste disposal. It is also an excellent educational tool for families who want to teach their children about the importance of sustainable living.

Notes from Aqua Gardening

  • Your entire worm farm must stay moist. Flushing your worm farm with half a small bucket of water once a week, or on very hot days, may be necessary.
  • In extreme cold climates, make sure the worm farm is out of the rain and a thick worm blanket or covering is being used. You could also add additional bedding of compost and worm castings.
  • A healthy worm farm should smell earthy. If your worm farm smells rotten and vinegary, then acidity may be too high. This can be fixed by gently aerating the worm farm, and/or adding some crushed eggshells, dolomite lime, or garden lime (a dusting over the top is a sufficient amount).

How much food scraps should I add to my worm farm?
After a week, you can start to add a small amount of food scraps, about a handful every few days. Gradually increase this as you notice the worms eating more. Once it’s established and the worms are breeding, they will consume more food scraps. Be careful not to overfeed them. Uneaten food will begin to smell and attract unwanted pests.

Can I use leachate on my edible plants?
No, if your leachate has a foul odor, do not use it on your garden and dispose of it. Do not use leachate on edible plants or young sensitive plants.

What is worm tea?
Castings can also be used to make ‘worm tea’. The simplest way to make worm tea is to add 2-4 cups of casting to a 9L bucket of water.

How often should I flush my worm farm with water?
Flushing your worm farm with half a small bucket of water once a week, or on very hot days, can help with keeping a suitable moist environment.

What should I do before adding my second working tray?
Stop feeding your worms for a week before adding the second working tray to make the worms nice and hungry. This will entice them to go into the second tray once it’s added.

How much food should I add to the second working tray?
You can add food scraps directly into the second working tray, but it will speed up the process by adding a small amount of organic soil, compost, or existing bedding first.
